Participation in ING Run For Something Better doubles
A record number of children - 204 - participated in Minot's ING Run For Something Better race Friday evening, April 25. That's more than twice as many children that ran in 2007. In addition to receiving T-shirts and finisher's medals, the kids had the opportunity to dine with the marathoners at the pasta dinner later in the evening.
Meghan Snell, Cause-Related Marketing manager, was on hand to kick things off as the official race starter. While the Minot race is much smaller than others, Meghan indicated that Minot excels in its level of committed volunteers, broad community involvement, the passion of the runners and the dedication shown by the number of the children who participate.
Three area schools had 100 percent of their students exercising each week to accumulate the 26.2 mile marathon distance. Not all of the kids from the schools braved the cool temperatures and winds to complete the last mile but, these schools and their staff demonstrated the support and commitment required to make this program so successful.
"We now have a strong foothold in the area schools with this program and some very passionate physical education teachers that will certainly help promote this event in our area." Connie Fiest, of the Magic City Striders Runners club and primary race director, stated. "It is my hope that we grow the kid's race event to a level where we state, we have this great annual kid's race and, oh by the way, we also have a marathon the next day."
