On August 13, more than 1,000 New York City youth competed in the annual track and field championship sponsored by ING Run For Something Better®. Thanks to the support of friends like you, those children (aged 5 to 16) had spent the summer participating in a free City Parks Foundation program funded through the ING Run For Something Better® (IRFSB).
The championship, held on Randall’s Island in the New York City, began with the youth marching into Ichan Stadium in an Olympic-style procession, carrying signs that identified their boroughs. Their entrance drew cheers from hundreds of family, friends, coaches and other athletes. All the athletes wore team T-shirts bearing the IRFSB logo along with the names of their respective parks — along with IRFSB orange shoelaces and orange sunglasses.
The competition kicked off with a shotgun start for the giant shuttle relay race for kids aged 5 to 7. Participants also competed in javelin, discus, shot put, triple jump, long jump, 400-meter run, 55-meter hurdles, 4 x100 meter relay and 100-meter dash. Every athlete could celebrate achieving his or her own personal goals and spending a summer staying fit and having fun.
“This was a great event and an example of ING's continued commitment to our next generation,” said Tariq Khan, Senior Vice President and Head of Market Development for ING U.S. Wealth Management Group.
“The City Parks Foundation has been a beneficiary of the ING Run For Something Better® since we became the title sponsors of the ING New York City Marathon in 2003,” said Pamela Bishop, Head of Cause Related Marketing at ING. “All of us have been very proud of every athlete who has taken part during that time, because we hope their decision to get involved was the beginning of a lifetime of physical fitness and good health.”
